What is ZCfgSvc.exe?
ZCfgSvc.exe, or the Intel PROSet Zero Configuration Service, is a service installed with Intel wireless drivers. Its purpose is to automatically connect to a wireless network and to provide additional configuration options for the wireless device.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system and may be safely disabled or uninstalled. By doing so, however, you will lose the features of Intel's wireless card software and any additional configuration you performed therein.

Dangers of ZCfgSvc
As this is an executable that runs on many systems with Intel wireless, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32 or %ProgramFiles%\Intel\Wireless\bin. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There will typically be only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have an Intel wireless device, you should never see this executable on your system.

Common problems
  • This process uses 100% CPU time
    • This is a common problem with many possible causes. After verifying that the problem is caused by the legitimate ZCfgSvc.exe, try disabling your anti-virus software.
    • If that does not work, try reinstalling your wireless drivers.
    • If the problem persists, disable the Zero Configuration service and use the wireless support built into Windows.
  • ZCfgSvc causes Internet connection problems
    • If ZCfgSvc is a problem, it should be disabled as it is not an essential process.
