What is wisptis.exe?
Wisptis.exe is the Windows Ink Services Platform Tablet Input Subsystem. It is installed along with Microsoft Office 2003 or later, with many Adobe products, and with Windows Journal Viewer. Its purpose is to facilitate pen input on tablet devices.
This is a nonessential process. If you do not have a tablet, you can disable the functionality by either uninstalling Windows Journal or going to the Regional Settings control panel -> Language -> Details and removing Advanced Text Services. If you simply delete the executable Windows File Protection will restore it the next time you run Adobe (Acrobat) Reader or Microsoft Office
Dangers of wisptis
As this is a relatively common process that runs on any system with Microsoft Office or Adobe (Acrobat) Reader, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection.
Common problems
- This process causes the machine to stop responding
- Wisptis.exe has a GDI object leak for which there is no known fix. The only recourse is to disable wisptis.exe as described above.
- This process continues to run even though I do not have a tablet
- This is by design. If you do not need the tablet input functionality, disable the service as described above.
