File description |
Recguard.exe with description Recguard MFC Application is a process file from company Hewlett-Packard Company belonging to product Recguard Application.
The file is
not digitally signed.
What is recguard.exe?
This is a process that comes preinstalled on many brand-name computers. Its purpose is to discourage tampering with the factory-installed recovery partition.
This process is not essential to the operation of the system and can safely be disabled. If you wish to delete this program, remove the corresponding entry from the registry before you delete it, or else you will get warnings about it not being found.
Dangers of recguard
As this is a legitimate executable that comes pre-installed on many name brand systems (including HP, Gateway, and eMachines), it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\sminst. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There should never be more than one instance of recguard.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a system with a recovery partition, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of a virus infection.
Common problems
- This process causes an error on shutdown
- If this occurs, you should disable the process from within msconfig.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU or causes security software to use 100% of the CPU
- This could potentially occur when there is a conflict between this process and that of your anti-virus or anti-spyware software. It is recommended that you disable recguard.exe
