What is oasclnt.exe?
This is the McAfee VirusScan OAS Client. It is one of the main components of McAfee VirusScan. This program is installed as part of many McAfee security software packages.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, you should not terminate it unless it is causing problems. By terminating it, you will lose the virus protection of your McAfee products. If you wish to disable this process permanently, you should uninstall your McAfee software.
Dangers of oasclnt
As this is a relatively common process that exists any system with McAfee software, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in a McAfee-related subdirectory of %ProgramFiles%. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There will typically be no more than one instance of this process running at any given time. The presence of multiple instances may be indicative of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you do not have any McAfee software installed, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of infection.
Common problems
- This file is missing or the program cannot start due to an application error
- This is likely to occur if a virus corrupts or delete it. Reboot into safe mode, reinstall your McAfee software, and run a virus scan.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU
- This can occur if there is a conflict with other security software installed on your computer. Try disabling any other security software you have installed.
- If the problem persists, try reinstalling your McAfee software.
