What is mcagent.exe?
This is the McAfee SecurityCenter Agent. This program is installed as part of most McAfee security software packages.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, you should not terminate it unless it is causing problems. By terminating it, you may lose some or all of the functionality of your McAfee products. If you wish to disable this process permanently, you should uninstall your McAfee software.
Dangers of mcagent
As this is a relatively common process that exists on any system with McAfee software, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in a McAfee-related subdirectory of %ProgramFiles%. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as mcagent.exe:
- Troj/Antimca-A (C:\)
- This is a Trojan that disables McAfee anti-virus products and then executes itself under the same name. It contains functionality to allow a remote attacker to take control over your system.
There will typically be no more than one instance of this process running at any given time. The presence of multiple instances may be indicative of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you do not have any McAfee software installed, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of infection.
Common problems
- DCOM Error in this process
- This is known to occur on occasion. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your McAfee software.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU
- This can occur if there is a conflict with other security software installed on your computer. Try disabling any other security software you have installed.
- If the problem persists, try reinstalling your McAfee software.
