What is mainserv.exe?
This is the main APC PowerChute Service. Its purpose is to provide the managed shutdown feature of APC uninterruptible power supplies. It is included with the software included with APC uninterruptible power supplies.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, it should not be terminated unless necessary. By terminating it, your system will not shut down when the power is out and the battery on the UPS is low. If you do not need or want this feature, you can remove APC PowerChute via the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
Dangers of mainserv
As this is a relatively common process that exists on any system with the APC PowerChute software installed, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in a subdirectory of %ProgramFiles%\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you see this process and you do not have an APC uninterruptible power supply, it is likely that your system is infected with malware.
Common problems
- Keys seem to stick or are not registered when playing games while this process is running
- There is a known issue with this software on some systems that prevents interrupts (including those from the keyboard) from being handled properly. You can try reinstalling the APC PowerChute software. If that does not work, you will need to uninstall it.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU
- This is known to occur with version 2.1.0 of the PowerChute software under Windows Vista. Try upgrading to version 2.1.1 or later.
- If the problem persists, try reinstalling your APC PowerChute software.
