What is lexpps.exe?
This is the Lexmark Printer Sharing application. It is installed as part of the Lexmark printer drivers and is installed to facilitate printer sharing over a network.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system; however, disabling this service will prevent you from being able to print over a network. Some reports indicate that disabling this service also disables the Print Spooler, thereby preventing any printing from taking place. Therefore, if this service does not cause any problems for you, it is recommended that you leave it running.

Dangers of lexpps
As this is a program that runs on most systems with a Lexmark printer, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32 . Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There will typically be only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a Lexmark printer and you see this process, your system may be infected with malware.

Common problems
  • This process wants access to the network
    • This is by design. Part of the functionality of the Lexmark Printer Sharing application is to act as a server to allow you to share your printer with other computers on the network
  • This process still exists even after uninstalling the Lexmark driver!
    • This seems to be a common problem. If you are sure that you have uninstalled the Lexmark driver, it should be safe to delete lexpps.exe.
