What is kbd.exe?
This is part of the Logitech and HP keyboard drivers. Its purpose is to facilitate the configuration and functionality of the special media keys on Logitech or HP keyboards.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system; however, it should not be removed unless it is causing problems. Removing or disabling this program may prevent you from being able to make use of some or all of the media keys on your Logitech or HP keyboard.

Dangers of kbd
As this is a legitimate executable that is installed on many systems with a Logitech or HP keyboard (and is preinstalled on most HP desktops), it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\HP. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as kbd.exe:
  • Troj/Kango-D (%SystemRoot%\drivers\kbd.dll)
    • This is a Trojan that contains functionality to contact a remote server via HTTP, allowing a remote attacker to take control of an infected system.
There is typically only one instance of kbd.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a Logitech or HP keyboard and do not have an HP computer, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of a virus infection.

Common problems
  • This program generates an error upon shutting down the system
    • This is a known problem. Try reinstalling your keyboard drivers. If a simple reinstall does not work, download the latest drivers from HP's website. If that still does not work, you can uninstall the Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard Solution. Note that this will disable some of your media keys.
  • Kbd.exe freezes on startup
    • This is a known problem under Windows XP Service Pack 2. Try downloading the latest drivers from HP's website.
