What is HPWuSchd2.exe?
This is the Hewlett-Packard Software Update Application. It is installed along with drivers for HP peripherals and comes pre-installed on most HP computers. Its purpose is to periodically check with HP's servers for driver or software updates.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system and can safely be killed or disabled. By killing this process, you will lose the automatic updating functionality of the HP drivers. If you do not want or need this functionality, it is recommended that you disable the process to save memory.

Dangers of HPWuSchd2
As this is a legitimate executable that comes with HP drivers and is pre-installed on many HP systems, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\HP\HP Software Update. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There should not typically be more than one instance of HPWuSchd2.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have any HP peripherals or an HP computer, the presence of this executable is a possible sign of a virus infection.

Common problems
  • This process tries to report usage information!
    • This is by design, as it is supposed to provide HP with information that they can use to improve their software. If you are uncomfortable with this, disable the process by removing it from startup in msconfig.
