What is convert.exe?
There are two common processes with this name. The first is a tool that is built into all NT-based versions of Windows that converts a FAT32 partition to NTFS. The second is a freeware unit conversion utility. The following is a screenshot of the latter Convert:

Neither process's execution is essential to the proper operation of the system; however, the former (the Windows file system conversion tool) should not be deleted, as it is a system file. It is safe to kill the unit conversion tool; however, you should never kill the file system conversion tool while it is running, as you may end up with a corrupt partition. If you wish to remove the unit conversion tool, you should uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. The following screenshot illustrates how the unit conversion tool should appear in the Task Manager:

As you can see in this screenshot, this process typically runs as the current user (in this case, Mike). A process with this name running as a different user may be indicative of a malware infection.
Dangers of convert
As this is a process that is both included in the operating system and a popular freeware application, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but will be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\Convert or %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware will use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as internat.exe:
- W32/Rado-A (%SystemRoot%)
- This is a worm that spreads several copies of itself around on your hard drive.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, the Windows file system conversion process should only be running when you are knowingly converting a partition. Likewise, the unit conversion process should only be running when you are knowingly running it. If you see a process with this name when you are not running either program, it is likely that your system is infected with malware.
Common problems
- "Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the drive letter:, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts?"
- This occurs when the partition you are trying to convert is being used (e.g, the system partition). If you would like your partition converted, say yes and it will convert it the next time you start your computer.
