File description |
Cli.exe with description Catalyst Control Centre: Command Line Interface is a process file from company ATI Technologies Inc. belonging to product Catalyst Control Centre.
The file is
not digitally signed.
What is cli.exe?
Cli.exe is part of the ATI Catalyst Control Center. It is installed with ATI graphics card drivers and provides a system tray icon from which you can adjust settings.
This process is a nonessential process but should only be terminated by disabling the system tray functionality in the ATI Catalyst Control Center software. Terminating the process through the task manager is typically harmless but is not recommended by ATI. By disabling this process, you will lose the functionality of the ATI Catalyst Control Center system tray icon. If you had an ATI card but no longer do, be sure your ATI drivers are uninstalled.
Dangers of cli
As this is a relatively common legitimate process with a somewhat cryptic name, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine ATI Catalyst Control Center.
Some malicious files will share the name of this process but will be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE. Other malware will use a name that appears similar to that of this process but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as the ATI Catalyst Control Center:
- W32/Rbot-GAQ (%SystemRoot%\System32)
- This is a backdoor Trojan worm that gives a remote attacker control over a compromised system. It commonly spreads via network shares.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time; however, there could be as many as three. The presence of multiple instances of this process may be an indicator of a malware infection, especially if four or more are running. If you do not have an ATI card and you never did, there is no reason you should have cli.exe. In this case, it is extremely likely that your system is infected with malware.
Common problems
- Cli causes system shutdown to be slow or to never complete
- This is a relatively common issue. Be sure you have the latest ATI graphics card drivers. If you do, try reinstalling the drivers.
- If the problem persists, try disabling cli.exe as described above.
- Cli crashes or causes system instability
- This is a known issue that is caused by having an incorrect version of the .NET Framework. Download version 1.1 of the .NET Framework.
- Cli uses 100% CPU time
- This can be caused by a conflict with Norton Internet Security. Try disabling the Catalyst Control Center as described above or disable Norton Internet Security.
- If you do not have Norton Internet Security, this can be caused by one of a myriad of other problems. If you do not need the functionality provided by the Catalyst Control Center, disable it. If the problem persists, your system may have a malware infection.
