What is bdss.exe?
This is the BitDefender Anti-Virus service. It is the main process for the BitDefender anti-virus software.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, you should not terminate it unless it is causing problems. By terminating it, you may lose some or all of the functionality of your BitDefender software. If you wish to disable this process permanently, you should uninstall BitDefender.
Dangers of bdss
As this is a relatively common process that exists on any system with BitDefender installed, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Scan Server\ or %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\BullGuard\BullGuard Scan Server\. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you see this process and you do not have BitDefender installed, it is likely that your system is infected with malware.
Common problems
- Application error when trying to start BitDefender
- This can occur when a virus has infected your system and deleted or corrupted parts of BitDefender. You should reboot into safe mode to run a virus scan and reinstall BitDefender.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU
- This is known to occur on some systems. Be sure that you have all of the latest updates for BitDefender.
- Ensure that you do not have any other security software that may be conflicting with BitDefender.
- If the problem persists, reinstall BitDefender.
