not digitally signed.
What is avgamsvr.exe?
This is the AVG Alert Server. It is the portion of versions of AVG anti-virus prior to 8 that is responsible for alerting you when a virus has been found.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, you should not terminate it unless it is causing problems. By terminating it, you may lose some or all of the functionality of your AVG software. If you wish to disable this process permanently, you should uninstall AVG.
Dangers of avgamsvr
As this is a relatively common process that exists on any system with AVG versions before 8, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in an AVG-related subdirectory of %ProgramFiles%. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you see this process and you do not have AVG installed, it is likely that your system is infected with malware.
Common problems
- Error when trying to start AVG
- This can occur when a virus has infected your system and deleted parts of AVG. You should reboot into safe mode to run a virus scan and then reinstall AVG.
- This process uses 100% of the CPU
- This is known to occur on some systems. First, try disabling any other software you might have running, especially security software.
- If the problem persists, and you are using AVG 7.5, try downgrading to AVG 7.1 or upgrading to AVG 8.
