What is snmp.exe? This is the Microsoft Simple Network Management Protocol Agent. It is a service that can be used on domains and corporate networks to keep track of the computers on the network and allows you to configure and manage SNMP-compliant equipment on the network. It is not enabled in default installations of Windows. This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, it may be necessary if you are on a domain or corporate network. If you wish to remove this service, you should uninstall it from Add/Remove Windows Components in the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Do not simply delete the executable, as it could result in system instability. Note that by disabling this service, you will not be able to use SNMP. The following screenshot illustrates how the process should appear in the Task Manager: As you can see in this screenshot, snmp.exe typically runs as SYSTEM. A process with this name running as a different user may be indicative of a malware infection. Dangers of snmp As this is a process that runs on many Windows systems, especially those in a corporate environment, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one. Some malicious files may have the same name but will be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware will use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name. There will typically be only one copy of this process running at a given time. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. Common problems "Faulting application snmp.exe, version *.*.*.*" This is known to be caused by the HP Surveyor service and by the APC UPS monitoring service. If you have either of these installed, try disabling them. This process uses 100% CPU time This is known to happen on occasion.
