What is VTTimer.exe?
This is part of the VIA S3 chipset drivers. It is responsible for handling the integrated graphics chip on motherboards with the S3 chipset. It comes preinstalled on any system with the S3 chipset and integrated graphics.
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, it should not be disabled or removed unless it is causing problems. Removing or disabling this program will prevent you from taking advantage of the extra features and diagnostics provided by it.
Dangers of VTTimer
As this is a legitimate executable that is installed on many systems with VIA integrated graphics, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as VTTimer.exe:
- W32/Sdbot-DEW (%SystemRoot%)
- This is a worm with backdoor Trojan functionality that spreads via known network vulnerabilities. It is capable of running various types of servers and keyloggers, and is able to steal saved passwords.
There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a system with a VIA chipset or VIA integrated graphics, you should not have this process. This would be a strong indicator of a malware infection.
Common problems
- This program causes random system instability
- This is a known problem with the VIA driver. Try uninstalling it. If your integrated graphics still work correctly, it is safe to disable.
