What is CCleaner.exe?
This is the main executable for CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). It is a free system utility that deletes unnecessary files and registry entries to free up space and improve performance. The following is a screenshot of CCleaner in Windows XP Service Pack 2:
This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; terminating it will simply close the application. It is not wise, however, to kill CCleaner while it is performing a cleanup, as it could result in partial removal of files or corruption of the registry. If you wish to remove this program, you should uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. The following screenshot illustrates how the process should appear in the Task Manager:
As you can see in this screenshot, CCleaner.exe typically runs as the current user (in this case, Mike). A process with this name running as a different user may be indicative of a malware infection.
Dangers of CCleaner
As this is a process that is the main part of a popular piece of software, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name but will be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\CCleaner. Other malware will use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There will typically be only one copy of this process running at a given time. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection.
Common problems
- BitDefender detects Trojan.Banker.VB.15E70689 in CCleaner.exe
- This is a false positive. This issue has been fixed in recent definition updates and was never present in any other virus scanning utility.
