What is lvcomsx.exe?
This is the Logitech QuickCam Communications Manager. It is installed with the drivers and software for Logitech QuickCam webcams. Its purpose is to facilitate the operation of the Logitech QuickCam software. According to some reports, it also sends information about your computer to Logitech and its partners.
This process is not essential to the operation of the system and can safely be killed or disabled. By killing this process, you may lose the ability to use the Logitech QuickCam software; however, other software that makes use of the webcam should continue to work properly. If the process is problematic or you are uncomfortable with the possibility of it sending information about your computer to Logitech, it is safe to disable from within msconfig.
Dangers of lvcomsx
As this is a legitimate executable that comes with Logitech QuickCam cameras and the associated drivers, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.
Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.
There not should typically be more than one instance of lvcomsx.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a Logitech QuickCam webcam, the presence of this executable is a possible sign of a virus infection.
